How Many Indians Use YouTube — and for How Long Each Day (2026)

Short answer: There is no single official count. DataReportal puts YouTube's ad reach in India at 500 million in late 2025 — and says that is not the same as active users. YouTube itself says Indian adults spend 72+ minutes a day on it. Broader counts of online video viewers, across all platforms, are 572 million (FICCI–EY) and 601.2 million (Ormax).

Each of those numbers is real, and each counts something different. Quoting them interchangeably is how "India has 600 million YouTube users" ends up in articles. This page lists every figure with its source, its date and exactly what it measures, so you can pick the one that answers your question.

How many people in India use YouTube?

The most-quoted number: 500 million (ad reach)

DataReportal's Digital 2026: India report says: "Google's advertising resources indicate that YouTube had 500 million users in India in late 2025." It puts that at 34.1% of India's population and 48.7% of its internet users, up 9 million (1.8%) on a year earlier. The report was published at the end of 2025 using data from October 2025.

The same paragraph carries the caveat most people drop: "these advertising reach figures do not necessarily represent the same thing as monthly active user figures though, and there may be meaningful differences between the size of YouTube's ad audience and its total active user base."

In plain terms: 500 million is how many people Google says an advertiser can reach on YouTube in India. It is not a count of people who opened YouTube last month, and DataReportal does not claim it is.

For context, DataReportal counts 1.03 billion internet users in India at the end of 2025 — 70.0% of the population.

What YouTube says about its own reach

At its Brandcast 2025 event, reported by Storyboard18 on 12 September 2025, YouTube said that 4 out of 5 internet users aged 18+ in India are reached by YouTube. The FICCI–EY Media and Entertainment Report 2026 (p. 61) prints the same claim with Comscore as the source — under a note that the page's data "has been provided and compiled by Google India, and has not been verified by EY".

That is a share of adult internet users, not a headcount. Do not multiply it by DataReportal's 1.03 billion: that total includes under-18s and is measured differently.

The broader counts: everyone who watches online video

Two independent research houses count online video viewers across every platform, not just YouTube. YouTube is the largest part of both, but neither is a YouTube number.

What is counted 2025 figure Source
People who watched online video at least once in the last month 601.2 million (41% of the population) Ormax Media, The Ormax OTT Audience Report: 2025, 19 September 2025
People who watch video on smartphones 572 million (up from 551 million) FICCI–EY, Media and Entertainment Report 2026, EY estimates

The two differ because they measure differently — monthly viewing on any screen for Ormax, smartphone viewing for EY. Both are ceilings for YouTube's audience, not estimates of it.

How much time do Indians spend on YouTube each day?

72+ minutes — YouTube's own figure

YouTube said at Brandcast 2025 that Indian adults spend more than 72 minutes a day on YouTube (Storyboard18, 12 September 2025). FICCI–EY's 2026 report repeats it as "72+ minutes, average daily YouTube consumption by online adults aged 18 years or above", source Comscore, on the same Google-supplied page EY did not verify.

At the same event YouTube said 87% of Indian viewers aged 18+ were more likely to use YouTube daily than traditional TV or video-on-demand services, from a YouTube survey.

Two cautions:

  1. It is an average across online adults, so it mixes heavy daily viewers with people who barely use the app. The typical viewer may spend far less or far more.
  2. It is YouTube's figure about YouTube, delivered at an advertiser event. Comscore is a respected measurement firm, but the number reached the public through YouTube and was not independently checked by EY.

What we could not find

DataReportal's India report does not give a daily-time figure for YouTube. We did not find an independent, published India-only daily-time number for YouTube from a source other than YouTube. If one exists behind a paywall — Comscore's own reports are subscription-only — we have not seen it.

Why the numbers differ so much

Figure Counts Who Independent?
500 million YouTube ad reach DataReportal, from Google's ad tools Compiled by a third party from Google's own data
4 in 5 adult internet users YouTube reach among online adults YouTube, via Comscore YouTube's figure
72+ minutes a day Average daily YouTube time, online adults YouTube, via Comscore YouTube's figure
572 million Smartphone video viewers, all platforms FICCI–EY Yes
601.2 million Monthly online video viewers, all platforms Ormax Yes

If you need one line for a pitch deck: "YouTube reaches about 500 million people in India by Google's own ad-reach measure (DataReportal, late 2025)." That sentence is accurate. "India has 600 million YouTube users" is not.

What this means for a creator

A big national audience is the ceiling, not your audience. The useful question is what a slice of it is worth to you.

Watch time is what you are paid on. YouTube ad revenue is earned per monetised view, at an RPM that varies several-fold by niche. A 72-minute daily habit across hundreds of millions of people is why advertisers spend on YouTube in India — but your share depends on niche and view count, not on the national total. To turn your own view count into a rupee range, the free YouTube income calculator applies India-specific RPM bands by niche and separates Shorts from long-form, which is the split that changes the answer most.

The audience is not all on a phone. A growing share watches on TV screens — see how many Indians watch YouTube on a TV. And it is not all in one language — see which Indian language to start a channel in.

The national money picture is a different set of numbers again. GDP contribution, jobs, and which "India" creator statistics are actually global are covered in India's YouTube creator economy in numbers.

FAQ

How many people use YouTube in India in 2026? The most-cited figure is DataReportal's 500 million, from Google's advertising tools, for late 2025 — 48.7% of India's internet users. DataReportal itself warns that ad reach is not the same as monthly active users. YouTube does not publish an official monthly-active-user count for India.

How much time do Indians spend on YouTube per day? YouTube says Indian adults spend more than 72 minutes a day on it, a Comscore figure shared at YouTube's Brandcast 2025 and repeated in the FICCI–EY 2026 report, which notes it was supplied by Google India and not verified by EY.

How many Indians watch online video? Ormax counts 601.2 million people who watched online video at least once in the last month in 2025; FICCI–EY counts 572 million smartphone video viewers. Both cover all platforms, not only YouTube.

What is the difference between YouTube ad reach and YouTube users? Ad reach is how many people Google's advertising tools say advertisers can reach on YouTube. Active users would be everyone who used YouTube in a period. DataReportal warns the two can differ meaningfully, and YouTube does not publish an active-user count for India.
