What YouTube Script Writers Charge in India (2026)
By Ashok Sachdev, Founder of JustShoot · Published 11 September 2026
Short answer: In India, freelance YouTube scripts are bid at roughly ₹950 for a Shorts script and ₹4,700–₹4,800 for a researched long-form script. A full-time in-house script writer is advertised at ₹35,000–₹40,000 a month, and an intern at ₹3,000–₹6,000. The spread is not about skill alone — it is about who does the research.
Those numbers come from listings that were live on 11 September 2026. Below is where each one came from, what it does and does not include, and the arithmetic that tells you which shape of spend fits your channel.
What live listings actually showed
These are average bids on Freelancer.in — what freelancers offered, not what the client ultimately paid. Winning bids often land lower, and the final invoice can land higher once revisions are counted. Treat them as the market's opening position rather than a price list.
| Job as posted | Average bid |
|---|---|
| English YouTube Shorts script writer | ₹956 |
| Product sales ad scripts | ₹956 |
| Hinglish stock-research webinar script | ₹4,687 |
| Script writer, true-crime / bodycam YouTube channel | ₹4,782 |
| Long-term wildlife Shorts scriptwriter (ongoing) | ₹54,615 |
That last row is a retainer for continuing work, not one script — it is in the table because leaving it out would make the ceiling look lower than it is.
I could not capture Fiverr or Upwork data. Both blocked automated access on the day, and I would rather show you five real listings than pad the table with half-remembered gig prices.
What the salaried route costs
The same day, on Internshala:
- Script writer, YouTube (Hollywood recap channel), Hyderabad, 2–3 years' experience — ₹35,000–₹40,000 per month.
- YouTube script writer intern, work from home, 3 months — ₹3,000–₹6,000 per month stipend, with a stated offer of up to ₹2.5 LPA afterwards.
Do not blend these into the freelance numbers. They are a different purchase: employment buys availability and accumulated channel knowledge, freelancing buys a deliverable. A salaried writer who has been on your channel six months writes a faster, closer-to-voice first draft than any freelancer's first attempt, and that difference does not show up in a per-script rate.
Why one script is ₹950 and another is ₹4,800
Five times the price for the same word count comes down to what sits underneath the words.
A ₹950 Shorts script is a hook, a turn and a payoff — perhaps 150 words. The brief supplies the idea. The writer supplies the structure.
A ₹4,700 long-form script carries research: claims that need checking, a sequence someone has thought about, a hook written against an actual SERP rather than a guess. Note that both ₹4,700-band listings in the table — a stock-research webinar and a true-crime channel — are research-heavy niches. That is not a coincidence. You are not paying for more sentences. You are paying for the hours before the sentences.
This is also why "₹500 per script" quotes exist and why they disappoint. At that rate nobody is researching anything.
The per-video maths, both ways
Take a channel publishing four long-form videos a month — the common weekly cadence.
Freelance: 4 × ₹4,700 = ₹18,800 a month, and you still brief, review and revise each one.
Salaried: ₹35,000–₹40,000 a month buys roughly 20 working days. At four videos that is ₹8,750–₹10,000 per video, and the writer absorbs research and revisions — but you are carrying the cost in a slow month too.
The crossover sits around seven or eight long-form videos a month. Below it, freelancing is cheaper. Above it, a salaried writer is, and the gap widens fast.
If you publish twice a month, both numbers are large against what those two videos are likely to earn. That is the honest read, and it is the situation most channels are actually in. And a script is only half the production bill — what video editors charge in India is the other half, captured from live listings the same way.
What you are buying that a tool does not sell
A good writer learns your channel. After a few scripts they stop asking how you open, because they know. They catch the claim that will get you a comment section argument. They push back on a weak idea before you have filmed it. None of that is a deliverable you can itemise, and all of it is why experienced writers cost what they do.
What a writer cannot give you is same-day turnaround at 11pm before a Thursday upload, and they cannot be four writers at once when you decide to batch a month.
A tool is the inverse. JustShoot captures your channel's voice once as a Tone Fingerprint and applies it to every script after that, with research and fact-check as pipeline stages rather than favours. Pricing is monthly and script-counted: Trial ₹0 (7 days, 2 scripts), Starter ₹499 (3 scripts), Creator ₹999 (7 scripts), Pro ₹1999 (15 scripts), Studio custom. GST-inclusive, no rollover.
Set against ₹18,800 of freelance for four videos, that is a different order of number — but it is also a different purchase, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. A tool does not push back on a bad idea. A writer does. Most channels that scale end up using both: the tool for volume and consistency, a human for the videos that carry real weight.
How to brief so the rate is fair
Rates come back high and vague when the brief is vague. Send these five things and you will get a tighter quote:
- Video length and format. "10-minute explainer" prices very differently from "60-second Shorts".
- Language and blend. Hindi, English, or a specific Hinglish ratio. "Hinglish" alone means four different things to four writers.
- Who researches. The single biggest driver of the number. Say plainly whether you are supplying sources or buying the research.
- Two videos you consider on-voice. Links, not adjectives. "Conversational" is not a spec.
- Revision rounds included. Unstated, this is where a ₹4,700 script quietly becomes ₹6,000.
If you want to test how consistent your own voice actually is before you hand it to anybody, the Tone Fingerprint tool reads your published videos and shows you the pattern you are asking a writer to match. Handing that to a freelancer shortens the learning curve you would otherwise pay for twice.
FAQ
What is a fair price for one YouTube script in India? For a researched long-form script, ₹4,000–₹5,000 matches what was being bid on 11 September 2026. Shorts scripts sit near ₹950. Below about ₹1,500 for long-form, assume no research is included and check that assumption before you commit.
Should I hire a freelancer or a full-time script writer? Count your monthly long-form videos. Under seven, freelancing is usually cheaper. Over seven, a salaried writer at ₹35,000–₹40,000 costs less per video and gets better as they learn your channel. At two videos a month, question whether either is the right spend yet.
Why do some writers quote ₹500 and others ₹5,000? Almost always research. The cheap quote assumes you supply the angle, the facts and the structure. The expensive one includes them. Both can be honest prices for genuinely different work — ask which you are getting.
Do I still need a writer if I use an AI script tool? For volume and voice consistency, often not. For the videos that carry real stakes — a sponsor integration, a claim you cannot get wrong, a launch — a human who knows your channel is worth paying for. The two are not substitutes so much as different tools.
How much does a YouTube script writer earn in India? Advertised full-time roles were at ₹35,000–₹40,000 a month for 2–3 years' experience, with internships at ₹3,000–₹6,000 and stated post-internship offers up to ₹2.5 LPA, as of 11 September 2026.
