How Many People Pay for YouTube Premium in India (2026)
YouTube publishes 125 million Premium and Music subscribers worldwide, not an India count. Here are India's real Premium prices and how Premium pays creators.
How Many People Pay for YouTube Premium in India (2026)

Short answer: YouTube does not publish an India subscriber count for Premium. Its only official figure is 125 million YouTube Music and Premium subscribers worldwide, including trials (March 2025). In India, Premium costs ₹149 a month for an individual, ₹219 for two people, ₹299 for a family and ₹89 for students. Any specific India subscriber number you see quoted comes without a source.
For a creator, the useful question is not the headcount but how Premium money reaches you. This page covers both: what is and isn't published about Premium in India, and how YouTube shares Premium revenue with creators — today, and under the new rules YouTube has announced for February 2027.
What YouTube publishes: 125 million, worldwide
YouTube's post 20 years & 125 million subscribers later… (5 March 2025), and Google India's own post the next day, say YouTube Music and Premium "reaches over 125 million subscribers, including trials globally". The Premium sign-up page in India still says "Join over 125 million Premium members".
Three things that number does not tell you:
- It is global. Neither post gives an India figure, a ranking, or India's share.
- It includes trials. People on a free first month count.
- It combines YouTube Music and Premium. Someone paying only for YouTube Music is in it too.
What nobody publishes
We could not find any sourced figure for YouTube Premium subscribers in India. Aggregator pages quote numbers such as "800K–1M subscribers" or "0.2% penetration", but they don't say where those come from, and YouTube has never published an India Premium count we could find. Treat any India-specific number as unverified until YouTube or a named research firm publishes one with a method.
What Premium costs in India
These are the prices on YouTube's own Premium page as seen from India on 6 October 2026:
| Plan | Price | Who it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | from ₹149/month (prepaid or monthly) | One person |
| Two-person | ₹219/month | You plus one member aged 13+ in your household |
| Family | ₹299/month | You plus up to 5 family members in your household |
| Student | ₹89/month | Eligible students, verified yearly |
Monthly plans come with a one-month trial at ₹0 for eligible new members. The page also offers Premium Lite — ad-free on most videos, with background play and downloads — but did not show a Lite price on the page we read.
For scale: FICCI–EY counts 216 million paid video subscriptions across 143 million households in India in 2025, across all streaming services. That figure is not broken down by service, so it does not tell you YouTube's share.
How Premium pays creators — today
YouTube's help page Your content & YouTube Premium explains the current rule: "Revenue from YouTube Premium membership fees is distributed to video creators based on how much members watch your content." It says "the majority of the revenue will go to our partners", but gives no percentage.
To be paid from Premium today, a channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program and have accepted the right monetization module: the Watch Page Monetization Module with watch-page ads turned on for long-form videos, and the Shorts Feed Monetization Module for Shorts. Downloaded viewing and background play count toward the watch time used for the split. Premium payments arrive at the start of each month with ad revenue.
In practice, this shows up in YouTube Analytics as YouTube Premium revenue alongside ad revenue. For most Indian channels it is likely a small line, because Premium members are a minority of any audience — but it is earned on views that pay nothing from ads, since Premium members see no ads.
How Premium will pay creators — from February 2027
On 10 August 2026, YouTube announced changes to the Partner Program that take effect on 1 February 2027. For subscription revenue:
- 30% of net Premium subscription revenue goes into a creator pool.
- 60% of net Premium Lite revenue goes into the pool.
- The pool is split by members' watch time and views, and creators then receive 55% of their share for long-form and 45% for Shorts.
The announcement also says Premium Lite will expand to "all countries where we offer YouTube Premium". It does not mention India specifically.
Here is the arithmetic on those published percentages, as an illustration rather than a forecast. For every ₹100 of net Premium revenue, ₹30 goes into the pool. If your long-form videos accounted for 10% of the watch time in that pool, ₹3 would be allocated to your videos and you would keep 55% of it, about ₹1.65. YouTube does not publish what "net" excludes, so this can only show the shape of the formula, not a rupee amount you can bank on.
What this means for a channel in India
Premium will not replace ad revenue. With no published India count and a small paid base, Premium is a supplement. Your income still depends mostly on ads, sponsorships and memberships.
Long-form earns more per Premium view than Shorts under the 2027 rules: 55% against 45%. That matches the gap in ad revenue between the two formats.
Premium views still need to be watched. The split is by watch time, so the same thing that drives ad revenue — people staying on your videos — drives your Premium share.
For a realistic monthly number for your own channel, the free YouTube income calculator applies India-specific ad RPM bands by niche and separates Shorts from long-form. Premium is not included in its estimate, which keeps it on the conservative side. FAQ
How many YouTube Premium subscribers are there in India? YouTube does not publish an India figure. Its only official number is 125 million YouTube Music and Premium subscribers worldwide, including trials, announced in March 2025. Unsourced India estimates circulate online but cite no method.
How much is YouTube Premium in India? On YouTube's own page on 6 October 2026: ₹149 a month for an individual, ₹219 for a two-person plan, ₹299 for a family plan of up to six people, and ₹89 for verified students, with a one-month ₹0 trial for eligible new members.
Do YouTubers earn money from YouTube Premium? Yes. Premium revenue is shared with Partner Program creators based on how much Premium members watch their content. YouTube says the majority goes to partners today; from 1 February 2027, 30% of net Premium revenue forms a creator pool, and creators keep 55% of their share for long-form and 45% for Shorts.
Is YouTube Premium revenue bigger than ad revenue? For most channels, no. Premium members are a small share of viewers, so Premium revenue is usually a smaller line than ads in YouTube Analytics. YouTube does not publish India figures to compare the two.
What is YouTube Premium Lite? A cheaper tier with ad-free viewing on most videos, background play and downloads. It appears on YouTube's India Premium page, which did not list its price when we checked. From February 2027, 60% of net Premium Lite revenue goes into the creator pool.
