How Many Indians Watch Game Streams? (2026)

Short answer: Nobody publishes a count of game-stream viewers in India. The numbers that exist measure something else. Lumikai counts 555 million gamers — people who play, not people who watch. Stream Hatchet measured 194 million hours of YouTube Gaming live streams from India in 2025, third in the world, as reported by Tubefilter. KRAFTON India says its BGMI esports events reached 86.78 million unique viewers in 2025. Each figure is real; none of them is "how many Indians watch game streams".

If you are building a gaming channel, the useful question is which of these numbers describes your audience.

Gamers are not viewers

Lumikai's 555 million is the number most often quoted, and it is the number most often misused. It counts people who play games — mostly on phones — not people who watch others play. Many gamers never watch a stream, and many stream viewers are casual players at most.

There is no published survey that asks a representative sample of Indians whether they watch game streams. Market-research pages that give a "game streaming audience" in India rarely show their method. Until someone publishes one with a sample and a definition, treat any national viewer count as an estimate, not a measurement.

Hours watched: the most measured number

Hours watched is the one figure built from actual viewing data. Stream Hatchet tracks live streams across platforms, and its 2025 YouTube report found:

  • 8.8 billion hours of YouTube Gaming live streams watched worldwide in 2025, 12% more than in 2024 — about a quarter of all gaming live-stream hours on the internet.
  • Japan leads, with top Japanese channels totalling 451 million hours.
  • India comes third with 194 million hours, after Japan and the US, according to Tubefilter's report of the data.

Two cautions. These are live streams only — gaming videos, highlights and Shorts are not in them. And Stream Hatchet describes its country totals in terms of each country's top channels, so they are best read as "hours on India's leading gaming channels", not total national viewing.

Esports: big numbers, company-reported

KRAFTON India, which publishes Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), reports that its esports events drew 930 million+ views in 2025, against 308.56 million in 2024, with 86.78 million unique viewers. For the 2026 BGIS event it reported 600,000+ peak concurrent viewers on YouTube and about 20 million watch hours.

These are useful, and they show where Indian gaming attention concentrates: mobile games, and BGMI above all. But they come from the game's own publisher, through a paid press release, and "views" across multiple channels can count the same person many times. The unique-viewer figure is the closer measure of people.

Where Indians watch

YouTube is where most measured Indian gaming live streams happen; the figures above are YouTube figures. Dedicated Indian apps such as Loco and Rooter also stream BGMI and other mobile games, especially in regional languages, but they do not publish audited viewer counts we could find.

For a creator, this means a gaming channel in India is mostly a YouTube decision, and mostly a mobile-game decision.

What this means for a gaming creator in India

Live hours are growing, but they are concentrated. A large share of measured hours goes to a small number of top channels. A new channel competes for attention against esports broadcasts and established streamers, not against "555 million gamers".

The opening decides the stream. Viewers browsing live gaming streams decide in seconds. Before you go live or post the highlight, test your opening line with the free hook generator, which writes three hooks in Hindi, Hinglish or English.

Plan the talk, not just the game. The gaming channels that grow beyond gameplay usually have a format: commentary, challenges, explainers, reactions. For planning that, see how to script a gaming channel in Hinglish, the best AI script tools for gaming channels, and how to prepare for a YouTube live stream.

How to quote these numbers

  • "555 million gamers in India (Lumikai, 2025)" — never "555 million game-stream viewers".
  • "194 million hours of YouTube Gaming live streams from India in 2025 (Stream Hatchet, via Tubefilter)" — say it is live streams only.
  • Label KRAFTON's BGMI figures as the publisher's own.
