Short answer: OpenAI says India has more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, its second-largest market after the United States (Sam Altman, February 2026). In August 2026 an OpenAI vice president said Indian weekly users had doubled year on year. For creators, Adobe's 2026 survey found that 85% of Indian creators who use creative AI call it integrated or essential to their work. Both figures come from the companies that sell the tools. No independent body publishes a count of AI users in India.

That doesn't make the numbers wrong. It means you should know what each one counts before you repeat it.

ChatGPT in India: what OpenAI has said

The 100 million figure comes from Sam Altman, in a Times of India article published ahead of the India AI Impact Summit in February 2026. TechCrunch's report of it adds that India has the most student users of any country, and that OpenAI had opened a New Delhi office in August 2025 and launched a low-cost ChatGPT Go plan for India, later made free for Indian users for a year.

Three things to keep in mind:

  1. "Weekly active" is OpenAI's own metric. OpenAI does not publish how it counts an active user, and no outside firm audits it.
  2. The free plan matters. A large share of Indian users came in through free access, so the 100 million does not tell you how many pay.
  3. It is ChatGPT only. Google's Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI inside WhatsApp and Instagram, and Indian tools all have users who are not in this number. Google has said India leads the world in using Gemini for learning, but has not published an India user count that we could find.

So "100 million Indians use AI" is not what the figure says. It says 100 million used ChatGPT in a week, by OpenAI's count.

Creators: what Adobe's surveys found

Adobe and The Harris Poll surveyed more than 16,000 creators across eight countries, including India, in May 2026. Adobe defines a creator as someone who publishes digital content several times a month and earns from it across digital platforms — emerging and professional social-first creators, not people employed full-time in creative industry jobs.

India findings, among creators who use or have tried creative AI:

  • 96% say it has accelerated the growth of their business or follower base.
  • 85% describe it as integrated or essential to how they work.
  • 98% say it helps them produce content faster — but 72% say its output usually needs moderate or extensive editing before it is ready to share.
  • 94% believe work they create with AI still reflects their own voice; 77% say human judgment remains essential to creative taste.
  • 52% always or often disclose AI use; 16% rarely or never do.
  • 96% use AI tools on mobile devices.

Two limits on these numbers. Adobe does not publish the India sample size in its release. And most of the India figures are shares of creators who already use creative AI, so they describe how AI users feel, not how many creators use AI. The adoption figure — 99% of Indian creators surveyed using generative AI — comes from coverage of Adobe's first edition, not from the 2026 release.

Adobe sells creative AI tools, and the survey is about creative AI. A survey run by a tool maker is not where you'd expect to find creators who reject AI.

What the two sets of numbers agree on

Despite the different sources, two things line up:

  • Use is already the norm. Whether 100 million weekly ChatGPT users or almost every surveyed creator, AI is no longer an early-adopter habit in India.
  • The output still needs a human. Adobe's 72% "needs editing" and 77% "human judgment is essential" match what creators find in practice: AI drafts fast, but the draft is not the video.

The second point is the one that matters for a channel. If everyone uses the same tools on the same prompts, the scripts start to sound the same. Among Adobe's Indian respondents who said standing out is harder than a year ago, 44% blamed AI-generated content for making it harder for unique voices to be noticed.

What this means for a creator in India

Your viewers use AI too. A large share of your audience, especially students, already uses ChatGPT every week. Generic, AI-sounding scripts are easier for them to recognise.

Use AI for the slow parts, not your voice. Research, structure, first drafts and repurposing are where creators report the time savings. The hook and the way you talk are what make a channel yours. Test your opening line with the free hook generator, which writes three hooks in Hindi, Hinglish or English for you to choose from and rewrite.

Language still matters. AI tools do not handle every Indian language equally well. See which AI writing tools support Indian languages, and why Hindi text costs more tokens than English in most AI tools.

Disclose when it matters. YouTube requires a label for realistic altered or synthetic content. Our guide to disclosing paid promotion covers the separate brand-deal label.

How to quote these numbers

  • "100 million weekly ChatGPT users in India, according to OpenAI (February 2026)" — not "100 million Indians use AI".
  • "85% of Indian creators who use creative AI call it essential (Adobe, 2026)" — not "85% of Indian creators".
  • Give the date. Both numbers are moving fast; OpenAI's own figure was said to have doubled within a year.

Where JustShoot fits

JustShoot is built on the second finding: AI is fast, but output needs to sound like you. It runs the pre-production pipeline — research and fact-check, script, storyboard, thumbnail brief, SEO package and shorts — matched to your channel's own voice through a tone fingerprint built from your past videos, in 11 languages.
